Central American Surfing

I've been surfing Central America since 1972. I took my first guests surfing at Petrero Grande in Costa Rica in 1980.

I've been avoiding crowds for years.

El Salvador. When La Libertad is firing there are guys that fly down just for the swell. The crowd is intense and forget the night life.

Costa Rica. Witches Rock can have five boatloads of surf hungry Gringos in the water. Everywhere is packed with guys in rental cars with attitude (The guys have the attitude, not the cars). Pavone's is a beautiful long left hander in Costa Rica, but 70 guys is a pretty normal crowd.

Panama. At Isla Catalina, I've had to deal with 25 guys in the water and a takeoff spot the size of a waterbed. I hate crowds. I also hate surfing shitty waves to get away from them.

Nicaragua. That's where I live now, in a cool little beach town named San Juan del Sur. It's like Costa Rica in the 70's. The locals are the friendliest people in Central America. For months on end, the wind blows offshore all day long.

Best of all, there are no roads to the best surf spots. You have to have a boat to access the best spots, and there are many.

Did you hear the one about the plane that landed in Costa Rica and they unloaded 116 board bags?
